Abdominal aortic aneurysms represent a common pathologiccondition, with an increasing incidence in the last decades.Unfortunately, the mortality rate in ruptured abdominal aorticaneurysms has also increased. The aim of this retrospectivestudy was to determine the risk factors that could interferewith the surgical outcome of these patients, especially with theperioperative morbidity and mortality rates.Materials and methods: In this study we included 138 consecutivepatients with infrarenal aortic aneurysm, who underwentelective repair (for chronic aortic aneurysm) or emergencyrepair (for ruptured aortic aneurysm), in the Cluj-NapocaCardiovascular Surgery Clinic between January 2003 andDecember 2011. We noted the most frequently associateddiseases and perioperative complications among the studiedpopulation. Three types of interventions were performed:tubular graft interposition, aortobiiliac bypass and aortobifemoralbypass. Results: The perioperative mortality in the elective repairgroup was 5.68% (5 - 88), while in the emergency repairgroup it was 46% (23 - 50).Conclusions: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm continuesto represent a condition associated with substantial risks andhigh mortality. Selective screening and elective repair aretherefore necessary for the improvement of the survival rate forpatients with infrarenal aortic aneurysm.
